9 Tips to Succeed in a Tableau DataDev Hackathon

A Tableau DataDev Ambassador shares how to prepare for a data developer hackathon with tips on developer tools, workshops, and thriving with teamwork.

Tableau DataDev Ambassador Cristian Saavedra Desmoineaux, co-founder of the DataDevQuest, a community challenge that helps people learn Tableau DataDev Tools by solving challenges and practicing for by example, and co-leader of ComuniDatos User Group, offers guidance on preparing for the a Tableau DataDev Hackathon.

As someone passionate about helping the Tableau community embrace DataDev tools, I’ve participated in and mentored teams in Tableau DataDev Hackathons. These experiences have been transformative, teaching me new skills, fostering connections, and challenging me to think creatively. Here are practical tips to help you thrive in a Tableau DataDev Hackathon.

What is a Tableau DataDev Hackathon?

Tableau DataDev Hackathon is an opportunity to build innovative solutions using Tableau Developer Tools. Participants work solo or in teams of up to three to create a working proof of concept, showcase it in a video, and compete for prizes. But the rewards go beyond competition: you’ll learn, connect, and have fun!

Here are some tips to help you succeed:

Understand the rules and criteria of the Hackathon

This might seem obvious, but start by reading the rules carefully. Familiarize yourself with the evaluation criteria, judging categories, and submission requirements to align your project with what the judges are looking for. This clarity will keep you focused and help you avoid surprises.

Explore Tableau Developer tools and join the DataDev program

Spend time with Tableau’s Developer Tools—APIs, SDKs, and extensions—to understand their capabilities. This knowledge will inspire project ideas and ensure your solution leverages the tools effectively. If you’re looking for more resources, joining the DataDev Program will give you access to the developer portal, tools to help you learn more about the developer platform, and Tableau’s GitHub repositories.

Join pre-Hackathon workshops

Attend pre-hackathon workshops. These sessions, often led by DataDev experts, provide insights into the tools and offer a space to ask questions and learn from the community. Once you register for the hackathon, keep an eye out for emails with upcoming workshops.

Plan your Hackathon project strategically

Hackathons are fast-paced. Break your project into three clear phases: define the concept, build the prototype, and prepare the pitch. Manage your time to ensure each phase gets adequate attention.

Join the DataDev Slack Workspace

The DataDev Program connects in our Slack workspace. Whether you’re looking for teammates, inspiration, or advice on your hackathon project, the DataDev Slack workspace will be beneficial. Getting access is easy! After you join the DataDev Program, look for an email with an invitation to Slack. Once you’re in, be sure to find the channel for the current hackathon #datadev-hackathon-2024-25 to find teammates, ask questions, or get support on your project.

Assemble a complementary Team

Check DataDev Slack channels to find teammates if you don’t have a team yet. Collaborate with people who bring different strengths—developers, designers, and communicators. Remember that It’s not all about coding!

Focus on a simple, impactful idea

Keep your idea simple and achievable within the time constraints. A well-executed small idea often outshines an overly complex one. Work iteratively, testing and refining as you go. You can dive into the ways other DataDev Ambassadors are leveraging Tableau Developer tools via DataDev Day on-demand sessions.

Create a clear and engaging pitch

Your project’s success hinges on how well you present it. Practice delivering a concise, compelling video pitch that explains the problem, solution, and impact.

Learn from the past, stay curious and enjoy the process

Explore previous hackathons in Tableau Project Galleries for inspiration. Observing what has worked for others can spark ideas and refine your approach. Hackathons are about experimentation and growth. Approach challenges with curiosity and celebrate what you learn along the way.
