Import, Analyze, and Create Dashboards - The GBI Case

Dr. Dan Stone and Dr. Ann O'Brien walk through how they use the GBI Case project to teach students how to answer client questions and visualize accounting data.

Evidence from applications suggests that the project is relevant, interesting, and useful for the goal of teaching introductory data visualization skills, using Tableau, to accounting students. The project is easy to implement, authentic, engaging, and a timely instructional resource for accounting instructors and students.

Dr. Dan Stone

Rosenthal Endowed Chair, University of Kentucky

Dan N. Stone, PhD, CPA (inactive) is the Rosenthal Endowed Chair at the University of Kentucky, where he holds appointments in accounting in the Von Allmen School of Accountancy and in analytics with the Center for Business Analytics. He is an author of the information technology sections of Wiley CPAExcel. His joint PhD degree is in accounting and information technology from the University of Texas at Austin. He teaches and conducts research on data visualization, business analytics, and the effects of technology and mindfulness on attention and learning. He enjoys hiking, meditating, kayaking, and playing pickleball and racquetball.

Dr. Ann O'Brien

Distinguished Lecturer, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Ann O’Brien, PhD, CPA, CFE, MBA teaches a class on strategic business system processes and AIS/EIS technology tools and developments. She also teaches a Foundation in Accounting Analytics course. Her teaching experience includes undergraduate and graduate accounting and executive short courses covering fraud examination, financial, managerial, cost, intermediate, and health care accounting topics. She is the Outgoing President of the AIS Educators Association. She has performed audit, tax, consulting, and litigation support services as a CPA and CFE. She earned a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin Madison, an MBA from the University of Texas Austin, and a BSBA in International Business from Georgetown University. She enjoys playing tennis, sailing, hiking, yoga, and dance.
