If Data Could Talk: Data Literacy Starts with Kids

Welcome back to another recap of our livestream series, If Data Could Talk! Each episode, data experts from the community share resources you can read, watch, or listen to around the topic of data literacy. This episode features host Andy Cotgreave, Technical Evangelist at Tableau, and special guest Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic, CEO and Founder of Storytelling with Data.

Andy and Cole jump into their conversation about how they’re teaching data concepts at home and the ways they’re learning about their own ‘grown-up’ jobs in the process. Cole gives an overview of how she’s weaving data into her kids’ everyday lives during quarantine, including activities like visualizing what they like to eat for dinner. Watch the segment here.

Cole also talks about how she works math and logic into data activities with her kids. By thinking about when to bring in aspects of storytelling, how to think about an audience, and different ways of communicating through data, she focuses the activities on the logic that breaks apart something ambiguous to make it more familiar.
