Upcoming changes to Tableau Desktop operating system requirements
From time to time, it's important to reflect and assess the technologies we support. Like the floppy disk, it's time to say goodbye to 32-bit operating systems.
Starting with Tableau 10.5 this fall, new versions of Tableau will only run on 64-bit operating systems. Our upcoming release, Tableau 10.4, will be the last version of Tableau Desktop, Tableau Reader, and Tableau Public to support 32-bit Windows operating systems.
By focusing on 64-bit operating systems, we can deliver new product innovation faster and create experiences that better leverage modern hardware. Computers with 32-bit Windows operating systems are limited to 4 GB of memory, which can severely hinder memory-intensive processes like data analysis. In comparison, 64-bit computers can accommodate an almost limitless amount of memory, more than enough for even the most computationally intensive tasks. With the 64-bit version of Tableau Desktop, you can enjoy fast performance while executing memory-intensive tasks like running complex table calcs, plotting millions of data points, and integrating large data sets.
We are here to help
If you use a 32-bit product, here are resources to help your organization through this upgrade and transition. Have questions? Our support team is here to help.
- To understand Tableau 32-bit product usage in your organization, you can request a 32-bit usage audit from the Tableau support team.
- To understand if you are personally using an impacted product, see out our product version identification guide.
- To better understand suggested upgrade strategies and product version compatibility, please visit our resource page.
If you are on a subscription plan or have a valid maintenance contract, you can upgrade to the current 64-bit version of Tableau Desktop at no additional charge.
What does this mean for you?
This change does not impact Tableau Desktop, Tableau Reader, or Tableau Public for Mac; or users who access Tableau Server, Tableau Online, or Tableau Public via a browser. See our resource page for details on impacted products and to see if you have a 32-bit version of Tableau Desktop, Tableau Reader, or Tableau Public installed.
We will continue to offer maintenance releases for our 32-bit products, which include bug fixes, security, and driver updates, through our standard 30-month support period. However, we would encourage you to upgrade to the 64-bit version of Tableau Desktop, Tableau Reader, or Tableau Public to take advantage of new features and more powerful processing.
