Tableau Agent: Accelerate Analysis with AI
Tableau has been on the journey to help people see and understand their data for over two decades. Thanks to data analysts who champion data culture, capture business requirements, prep data, and create data content for end users, this mission has been a success and will continue to be a success.
Data analysis isn’t a skill limited to those with the title of “analyst”. So many of us use data to make decisions—myself included. In fact, it’s one of the most in-demand tech skills sought by employers today.
The rise of generative AI presents a significant opportunity for us to bring transformative benefits to analytics. With the release of Tableau Agent (formerly Einstein Copilot for Tableau), our mission is taking an exciting turn to help save time, provide faster insights, and empower new tableau analysts to be even more productive with an AI assistant.
Like the journey of AI itself, we’re also on a journey with Tableau Agent, initially focusing on a few key skills, then adding more capabilities on a monthly basis. While no AI is perfect, we are all on this AI journey together, using feedback to continuously refine its capabilities and make AI more reliable and accurate across the entire analytics journey.
Tableau Agent is now generally available in Tableau Cloud Web Authoring, in addition to Tableau Prep and Catalog, through Tableau+.
What is Tableau Agent?
Using generative AI and statistical analysis, Tableau Agent is able to understand the context of your data to help prepare data sources, create visualizations, and tell stories with your data more efficiently. It automates time-consuming analytics processes, helping accelerate data-driven decision-making across the entire analytics journey. Tableau Agent is a trusted AI analytics assistant, built on Salesforce’s Einstein Trust Layer, inheriting all its security, governance, and trust capabilities.
Fulfilling the promise of generative AI, Tableau Agent presents an efficient, insightful, and ethical approach to data analytics. Think of it as an intelligent AI assistant integrated into the Tableau suite of products to make everyone successful in their analysis workflow—whether they’re an experienced data analyst or a data explorer.
Accelerate data-driven decisions with trusted AI
Tableau has thousands of features—and with Tableau Agent's in-product assistance, you ask questions using natural language, and from data prep to writing calculations, Tableau Agent automates many time-consuming, repetitive tasks—increasing analyst productivity and speeding time-to-insights.
Curate and transform your data
Preparing a data source and writing calculations in a new language can be complex, especially for new Tableau users. Once you’ve prepped your data, it’s also important to document the data source accurately, ensuring that data fields are well-described and clearly understood by others.
Tableau Agent simplifies both these processes by helping users quickly prepare and catalog their data.
Tableau Prep users can describe a calculation in natural language to Tableau Agent and automatically receive a calculation to add to their Prep flows. You don’t have to spell out the calculation—just explain your problem and what you want to accomplish, and Tableau Agent will create a valid calculation for you.
Once your data is prepped, you can also use Tableau Agent in Tableau Catalog to get comprehensive AI-generated descriptions for data sources, fields, workbooks, and tables, enriching metadata and making data more accessible and understandable to others.

Jumpstart data exploration
Tableau Agent is a great tool for beginners—you don't need to know all of the technical aspects of Tableau to analyze data and get insights. Tableau Agent suggests relevant business questions to kickstart your analysis. As you explore, you can ask more in-depth questions to uncover deeper insights as you go.
In a worksheet, a set of recommended questions based on the data source's metadata makes it easy for users to start analyzing their data. From there, Tableau Agent helps users iterate and refine data exploration faster. You can ask Tableau Agent to show you trends over time and relationships between metrics. You can ask follow-up questions to drill deeper into dimensions or focus on specific time periods and Tableau’s insights and visualizations will be automatically adjusted.
Explore data and get valuable insights at speed
Tableau Agent leverages built-in visual best practice guidance, allowing you to create visualizations using simple natural language prompts and reduce complex and time-consuming tasks. Tableau Agent can perform simple tasks like filtering and sorting data. It can also make adjustments such as adding labels at the end of bars, or changing an encoding from color to size.
Beyond just modifying visualizations, Tableau Agent can help with more complex tasks while creating a visualization in Web Authoring. It’s able to translate natural language descriptions into valid Tableau calculation syntax, and vice versa. This means, you can tell Tableau Agent to create complex calculations, update existing calculations, or describe calculations in natural language. Tableau Agent will even name new calculations for you, making Tableau’s workflow smoother and more intuitive.
Because Tableau Agent can create calculations and update or describe existing calculations in a matter of seconds, it’s easier than ever to perform complex analysis and add fields to your data source—on your own or on the fly.
